Ben&Ben team up with Taiwanese Mandopop star WeiBird on dreamlike track “Cheap Love”

2021 has been a massive year for Filipino folk-pop collective Ben&Ben in terms of commercial and critical success. Their sophomore album, Pebble House, Vol. 1: Kuwaderno has earned glowing praises from reputable music critics and publications in the Philippines and Asia, with Rick Olivares of ABS-CBN News calling it a “brilliant masterpiece” and Paul John Caña of Esquire Philippinespointing out its vital role in establishing the band as the “pre-eminent artist of their generation.” In less than two months, Ben&Ben’s recently released album has surpassed more than 30 million streams on Spotify alone—a groundbreaking feat that attests to the group’s universal appeal and enduring impact for nearly an entire decade.

After achieving records in both streaming and digital sales and sending their songs to the top of the music charts, Ben&Ben are determined to put their work on the global music map with the release of “Cheap Love,” a new collaborative single with acclaimed and best-selling Taiwanese singer-songwriter WeiBird.

Epitomizing the moment when dawn shows its first light, “Cheap Love” is the sonic equivalent of wandering between a dreamlike state and an awakened mind throughout the night. It’s about the journey of finding a long, lasting love after having experienced so much pain in the past. According to William Wei, known professionally as WeiBird, the title of the song is a play on words, and nothing more than just faint bliss and ecstasy. “It’s a temporary band-aid for a big gushing wound, but it never fills the hole inside. Moreover, it increases the feeling of emptiness. What I’m trying to say is, you can’t bargain your way into love. Love is truly hard to find.”

Ben&Ben interprets the material in the same manner as WeiBird does, aware of the reality that comes with seeking genuine love in the direst of situations. “With the chorus repeating over and over how difficult it is to find a ‘rhyme better than you and I,’ it shows how drawn and enamored we are by the idea of love but oftentimes find ourselves in a pit when trying to really make it something more.”

With its stripped-down instrumentation embracing listeners with a sense of comforting warmth, “Cheap Love” expresses the woes and triumphs of a generation caught up in romantic longing and desire. The listening experience is made more compelling by the vocal harmonies of Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin, and the earnest delivery of WeiBird, making the audience feel more hopeful than ever despite the uncertainty of the present conditions.

“We’re grateful that by just being our authentic selves musically, we were able to add to the song both in production, vocals, and instrumentation something that WeiBird seemed to be happy with,” the nine-piece group shares in a statement. “We took an active role in building on the magic that the song already had, and we’re happy with how it turned out.”

The song was written and produced by WeiBird himself, with co-production and mixing duties by frequent collaborators Aven Tsai and Sean Sinclair. The Mandopop and folk-pop star explains that Ben&Ben also pitched in ideas for the arrangement and music side of things, resulting into a more polished, sonically impressive output that showcases the best of both worlds. 

WeiBird adds, “I wrote, played and produced the whole song on the album version. However, for this collab I haven’t had to do much because Ben&Ben was amazing. I remember listening to a demo of them playing along to my original track, and I could already imagine how it would come to be later. And the final results were not far from my imagination. It was awesome.”

“Cheap Love” is the first single off WeiBird’s first official English album. It follows the success of his fifth studio album, Sounds Of My Life, which peaked at No.1 on Taiwanese album charts in 2020, and received four nominations at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards, including Album of the Year and Best Mandarin Album. The track also serves as the second international collaboration of Ben&Ben after “Leaves,” featuring K-pop star Young K. 

“Cheap Love” is out now on all digital music platforms via Sony Music Taiwan. The official music video will premiere on on 10.15.21 at 10pm, PH time.

Nobody’s Home hits the road in the music video of Ely Buendia-produced “Cigarette Daydreams”

The Filipino alt-rock trio reimagines Cage The Elephant’s chart-topping 2014 hit

Filipino alternative rock trio Nobody’s Home has released the official music video of their new single “Cigarette Daydreams”—a cover of Cage The Elephant’s chart-topping hit in 2014.

Directed by Ysa Aranda of Swimming Pictures, the clip features the promising trio on a random road trip, performing in front of a warehouse and running away from reality “to find peace of mind,” as the lyrics suggest.

As for the concept behind the music video, Aranda shares that it’s derived from her own personal experience, particularly the feeling of comfort that driving brings. “I had to go for a drive and dream scenarios that would resonate to the song itself. Aside from the lyrics of the song, driving has helped me cope specially in these trying times, hence the driving scenes present in the MV.” 

Aranda’s take on “Cigarette Daydreams” is inspired by the visual narrative of Jóhann Jóhannsson's End Of Summer, a short film that serves as a document of a calm scenery in “one of the most crucial and endangered areas of our planet.” 

Paying homage and making it their own

The song was produced by Nobody’s Home and Ely Buendia, and its overall treatment maintains the melodic charm of the original, while incorporating ‘90s-sounding guitar-rock affair, candied pop hooks, and pulsating synths to the mix.

“Generally, we wanted to pay respects and keep the original vibe of the song,” Frontman and principal songwriter Eon Buendia explains. “We stuck to that nostalgic acoustic feeling for the verses while making it simpler in terms of instrumentals. But when it came to the choruses, that's where we changed the vibe from the original’s lighter feeling to a darker and synth-y tone that is more akin to the sound of the band.”

Nobody’s Home strikes a balance between paying homage to the song and making it their own—a task that they supremely aced with conviction and confidence. “The main idea we had was that the verses would be simple and we wouldn't add much to it in order to keep the spirit of the original, and then the choruses would be where we came in and do our thing,” Eon shares in a statement. “And then we put elements that we usually use when producing our personal tracks such as vocal layering, synthesizers, and lead guitar lines.”

Production notes

The track’s producer, Ely Buendia, also commends the alt-rock outfit’s dedication in upping the ante of their version, while retaining the song’s feel-good catharsis in the process. “I just trusted the boys’ musical instincts, knowing that their own personal preferences would make sure that this will not be a note for note translation.” 

In terms of production, Ely points out, “we at least wanted the production to be gritty yet polished, if at all possible, to honor the vibe of the original.”

Young Cocoa sets his sights on conquering the Asian region and beyond with summer anthem “Zesto”

Breakthrough Filipino rapper Young Cocoa has been gainingsignificant attention worldwide thanks to his previous chart-topping hits “Manila,” which got included in one of the playlists curated by BTS’ very own RM, and received props from Korean music stars such as Eric of The Boyz, Omega X, Dawon of SF19 and Lia Kim from 1Million Dance Studio. To date, his signature smash has racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone, and has enjoyed airplay on mainstream radio stations in Metro Manila.

According to the rising Asian artist, “Zesto” was conceived as a way for Young Cocoa to express his FOMO (fear of missing out) on what could have been the perfect season to unwind and celebrate fun away from the bustling metropolis. He also considers “Zesto” as his most upbeat material so far, a bop that in the words of Young Cocoa himself, would “make you groove in your own space.”

“I felt like envisioning what the perfect summer would have been like for my friends and I, and channeled that daydream and nostalgia into my writing,” Young Cocoa says. “It ended up acting as a release for me in a positive way, and with ‘Zesto’ as everyone’s go-to refresher, naming it that and using it as a primary element aligned quite well.”

“Zesto” was written by Young Cocoa and produced by Korean-based beatmaker/producer Lazy Wanderlust a.k.a. Juhyeong Jeon. The latter approached him on Instagram and shared a couple of beats in his repertoire for approval. “It’s interesting because the stars sort of aligned when we got in touch,” Young Cocoa recalls. “His sound is what I’m looking for in this particular track. In general, we tweaked certain things here and there, with help from my engineer Joseph Gregory, but Juhyeong really understood my sound from the get-go.”

The track is accompanied with a music video that was originally developed by the 24-year-old hip-hop artist and his good friend, Kartik Gupta, and further enhanced by Chapters PH. The visual narrative centers on a playful little trip that blends fantasy elements with reality. As Young Cocoa puts it, “There are notably a lot of Southeast Asian references sprinkled into the video as well that a lot of people might be able to point out. Overall, it was a really fun time under director Kurt Rebolledo, and there were a lot of memorable moments during the shoot.”

Warm Tea on a Rainy Day

It is a huge honor to be a part of the anthology Warm Tea on a Rainy Day. It is exclusively available via Amikaso Library.

I consider this book to be my lucky charm. When my book Speak Blog Live was being published, this anthology was in its editing stage. When the book’s editing team has closed the call for submissions, my book’s publishing process became smooth sailing. I cannot imagine launching my book without the boost of confidence from Warm Tea on a Rainy Day.

𝘉𝘺 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘢 𝘓𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘴

Unlike most crocheters, I did not learn the craft in school. Instead, I learned how to crochet from a DIY box from Target during a summer vacation spent in LA. My first project was a slim scarf, and that was it.

I later rediscovered crochet after learning how to knit during the 2018 edition of the "Knitting Adventure" tour at the storied Banaue Rice Terraces. The tour was hosted by Knitting Expedition, a social enterprise that trains mamas in Banaue to knit plush toys, accessories, and home decor.

As expected, Ifugao women are innately skilled in knitting, and have become expert makers in no time.

Joining their tour was a blast! It was my childhood dream to visit the terraces, and I simply did not have the chance to go there before. Finally, a painful breakup motivated me to seek new experiences, and knitting became one of my goals.

The Banaue tour let me see the famous terraces and interact with the friendly locals, while I learned the basics of knitting from the women who are so gifted with their hands. By the time I reached Manila, I was hungry for YouTube tutorials to supplement my knowledge on my newfound hobby.

After a few months, I found knitting to be too slow for my liking. This led me to revisit crochet. I picked up a yarn and a hook from a craft store in the mall, and it all came back to me. I managed to crochet an infinity shawl through muscle memory.

From there, I continued making shawls and scarves for myself and my loved ones. I loved crochet so much that I had this belief that I did not create for profit’s sake. Instead, I wanted crochet to become my safe space, and my happy hobby. It was never an option for money-making.

I brought my yarn bag with me wherever I went. I crocheted during seminars, in between meetings, and during coffee breaks. Crochet became a natural extension of myself. It helped me beat boredom during my long commutes and alleviated my anxiety before interviews and important meetings. I was able to churn out ideas for my blog while making my scarves.

They say that the best ideas emerge while bathing or driving. For me, the best ideas come to me while crocheting. Maybe this ideation process is the reason why crochet became an addiction and a source of joy.

When the lockdown was imposed in 2020, I thought of ways to contribute to society as the Covid-19 pandemic raged on. Luckily, I found an organization online that collected handmade earsavers for healthcare workers. I joined them as a volunteer, and I ended up donating more than two thousand earsavers to medical heroes in various hospitals.

My passion for volunteerism was further ignited when I found another organization for crocheters. This time, they collect octopus amigurumi dolls and beanies for premature babies in government NICUs. I donated 76 octopus amigurumi dolls and 60 preemie beanies. All of these handmade donations were made possible because of my love for crochet.

My ability to crochet for hours on end has inspired me to apply myself to the other aspects of my life. I am also a writer, and with four years of blogging under my belt, I realized that it was time to fulfill my childhood dream of publishing my own book. I wrote the book using the same discipline I acquired through crocheting. I worked on a certain number of words a day, then I took breaks to refresh and recharge my mind.

After writing my manuscript and several productive meetings with a leading publisher, I am proud to share that my self-published book, "Speak Blog Live", will finally be released soon. It is currently undergoing registration and publishing.

It is a nonfiction book that teaches you the discipline and habit of regularly writing on one’s blog. I give examples on how one can enrich his or her life in order to be inspired to regularly compose blog entries with a unique voice. I am so excited to share this book to the world!

Who knew that my crochet habit and hobby would lead me to writing a book? Indeed, a solid work ethic and a healthy crafting mindset can open doors and opportunities. The pandemic may have forced me to stay home, but it has also switched on my passions for crafting, volunteering, writing, and self-publishing.

It is my dream that more people will discover hobbies that enrich their lives and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves.

Israel joins in Dubai Expo 2020

The inauguration ceremony for the Israel Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai took place in the presence of 300 invited Israeli guests and UAE guests led by H.E Dr. Ahmad Belhoul, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprises. The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of Israel Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozov and with the participation of Ministry of Tourism Director-General Amir Halevi, MFA Deputy Director General for Media and Public Affairs Noam Katz, the Commissioner-General of Israel's Expo 2020 Pavilion Elazar Cohen, Rabbi Eli Abadi and the Israeli Consul in Dubai Ilan Sztulman.  Rabbi Duchman affixed the mezuza during the opening ceremony. 

This is the first time that the State of Israel has a national pavilion in an event of such magnitude in an Arab country. The invitation for Israel to participate in the event was already extended in 2018, even before the decision was taken to establish official relations. It is estimated that around 15 million people will visit the Israeli pavilion during the course of the event.  

The Israeli pavilion, under the banner Connecting Thoughts - Creating the Future and the headlineTo Tomorrow  in a Hebrew and Arabic logo, features a design (by AVS Creative) inspired by the desert dunes common to both Israel and the Gulf States. The pavilion, which has no sides or barriers, signifies openness and welcoming guests. All these reflect the idea of ​​the power of tomorrow to connect us and that creating a better future for humanity is within reach if we combine forces. The secondary theme, Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, allows Israel to showcase its capabilities in a variety of different areas such as agriculture, cyber security, medical equipment, water technologies and more. 

Israel Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozov: “Peace allows us to forge a new reality in the Middle East that will bring prosperity, security and stability to all. We believe that in order to reach a better tomorrow, one should choose practical and positive actions today. Speak Blog Live Book Launch

Last October 7, 2021, I celebrated the launch of my book, Speak Blog Live. Due to the pandemic restrictions, I only had my family with me. My partner, Lorenz, and my mom were with me to share in the festivities.

We had delicious food and a minimalist ISBN cake from The Round Robin Cafe. My partner also gave me another cake, as well as a bouquet of flowers. He served as my book’s editor and proofreader. I could not have done this without him.

I fulfilled my childhood dream of becoming an author. I never stopped believing in my dreams, and I hope that this achievement of mine will inspire you to believe in yourself! It is possible to create opportunities for yourself, for as long as you work hard and hustle smart.

Zack Tabudlo delivers romantic earnestness on new song “Ba’t Ganto Ang Pag-ibig”

It’s interesting to think how infatuation can bloom into something divinely romantic, yet difficult to articulate. Like his other material, “Ba’t Ganto Ang Pag-ibig” is written, composed, produced, mixed, and mastered by Zack Tabudlo. Zack points out, “it has a very laid-back feel to it lyrics wise or production wise. It’s something that a lot of people would just vibe to.”

Zack Tabudlo is an alt-pop RnB artist from Manila, Philippines. He hit the ground running when he began his music career, becoming a finalist for reality talent show Talentadong Pinoy at the age of 10. He was a contestant for The Voice Kids season 1.

Promising newcomer BLASTER has recently joined the esteemed roster of Island Records Philippines, a domestic label division under UMG Philippines, which is dedicated to helping the best musical talent from the Philippines to achieve local success, whilst reaching new audiences worldwide.

The lead guitarist and occasional vocalist of award-winning band, IV of Spades will be part of an internationally renowned label that includes some of the most exciting and future-forward artists in the country such as Zack Tabudlo, Juan Karlos, Over October, Fern., and dia mate.

A&R Manager and Label Head of Island Records Philippines Bel Certeza recently expressed interest in working with BLASTER on upcoming releases that will showcase the multi-hyphenate’s core strength as both an artist and an innovator. “Island Records Philippines is looking forward to help and guide BLASTER to where he wants to take his music and vision as an artist. Releasing a body of work is in the pipeline but it’s not yet final as we’d also like to learn with him and his audience as we go along.”

Certeza, who used to be the former Road Manager of IV of Spades, pitched the idea to BLASTER with the intention to understand where he is now as an artist and where he wants to go moving forward. After hearing what Blaster has in mind, she immediately presented how Island Records Philippines can help bring his vision to reality. “After a series of long Zoom calls with MCA Music Managing Director Enzo Valdez, we were able to come up with a deal that caters to BLASTER’s integrity as an artist but also something that would make sense to the label,” Bel shares. “And now here we are.”

On the heels of the official signing is the release of “DISKO FOREVER (Japanese version),” a retro-modern bop that blends Manila Sound with bedroom electronicaand avant-pop influences. Sung completely in Japanese, the new iteration serves as a warm-up track to the Tagalog version, which the young Filipino artist will be releasing soon. 

With its groovy rhythms, art-rock guitars, and eclectic arrangements, the genre-averse jam takes you back to the dance floor in a time that doesn’t allow communal gathering. The delightfully bittersweet track also doubles as a tribute to the golden era of Pinoy pop music, and is reimagined for a new generation of listeners to enjoy.

Grammy-nominated R&B powerhouse Givēon Continues global domination with new song “For Tonight”

Framed Sheerness

Here’s a DIY project that I can recommend for you all: framing your artworks! I chose to frame these sheer embroidery works that I made as a pattern tester for The Craft Central. I purchased these floating wooden frames here, then I simply placed the embroidered fabrics inside the acrylic pieces.

I liked the end result. These frames can also hold photos, drawings, doodles, concert tickets, notes, plant specimens, and other memorabilia. Best of all, they cost less than Php130 each.

Hackensack Carhop

I experienced vintage Americana with my Hackensack carhop experience! I ordered their 50’s cheeseburger and strawberry milkshake, which were both delicious! Their car tray added a touch of nostalgia and whimsy.

PhilPop 2021 DigiCamp integrates workshop-based approach to this year’s virtual edition

Thyro and Yumi, Marlon Barnuevo and Krina Cayabyab talk about major adjustments to foster a more inclusive learning environment for DigiCamp participants

Despite the challenges of adapting to a virtual setting, PhilPop 2021 DigiCamp: Music Breaking Borders has successfully integrated strategic innovations to its curriculum that would help aspiring singer-songwriters enhance their skillset and be part of a progressive learning experience.

Facilitated by some of the Philippines’ most respected educators, artists, and music leaders via Zoom, the country’s premier songwriting competition continues to hold a series of lectures and workshops for a period of four months (from July to October 2021) to put a spotlight on the next generation of OPM stars and future music industry fellows.

PhilPop Program and Marketing Manager Gab Cabangonreiterates that the team has always believed in the importance of opening several opportunities for the attendees to learn different aspects of music outside of songwriting. “We wanted to give the fellows options, guides, and tools that could help them with the direction on their music journey. The additional skills that they learn from this could help them evolve as practitioners in the music industry and further fuel their passion and love for the craft of music. Lastly, it wouldn’t hurt to also encourage songwriters to learn how to write songs to make society a better place for everyone.”

Marlon Barnuevo, PhilPop finalist 2013 and one of the resident coaches, considers PhilPop 2021 DigiCamp: Music Breaking Borders as one with the most matured curriculum for a songwriting camp. “Aside from the fact that most of the coaches came from the acclaimed Elements Songwriting Camp, all the past PhilPopbootcamps provided valuable knowledge that allowed the teaching contents to be refined into what we are currently delivering now.” 

Given the virtual format of this year’s bootcamp, the coaches have tweaked some of their best practices to adhere to a more inclusive learning environment. As a college educator, Marlon has been doing full-online modality since the pandemic started, so there was little adjustment on his part when it comes to delivering lectures for the PhilPop DigiCamp participants.

“PhilPop has also successfully adapted the synchronous-asynchronous method of delivering lectures, which is now a very common approach in all academic institutions around the country,” Marlon beams with pride. “What I had to adjust to, and what I sorely miss is the absence of face-to-face fellowship activities. In all the previous camps, it has always been a tradition to hold jamming sessions every evening over food and drinks. This form of fellowship is what’s missing in this year’s camp.”

In order to compensate with the need to make the songwriting mentorship more interesting, PhilPop coaches provided a workshop-based approach to give participants an inclusive and well-rounded perspective on different areas and fields in the music industry such as songwriting, music production, digital marketing, and advocacy writing—to name a few. 

A first-time coach herself, University of the Philippines instructor and Baihana member Krina Cayabyab shares that aside from making slides and presenting music during her lecture, she made her sessions more informative by giving clearer pointers that are essential for interacting with the current creative and digital economy. 

“I believe this virtual setting has given more flexibility and opportunity for the participants to sink deeper into their work and absorb discussions further, and make the most out of these in their own time, capacity, and space,” says coach Krina. “Though it might be challenging in some circumstances, collaborating with fellow participants and meeting them virtually, I think, still achieved much of the DigiCamp’s objectives. It’s really like accomplishing tasks through today’s reality, and the DigiCamp has made it happen as effectively as it can ever be.”

Award-winning R&B singer-songwriter, producer, and composer Thyro Alfaro is generally satisfied with how the participants took the new format this year despite the prolonged period of remote learning. “I think they’re enjoying the process,” the two-time PhilPop winner explains. “I can hear it in their songs that they’re really applying what we’re teaching.”

Yumi Lacsamana, another acclaimed pop/R&B multi-hyphenate and two-time PhilPop grand champion, echoes Thyro’s observation, pointing out how her mentees have managed to adapt easily in a virtual setting. “It’s not the same but it’s more challenging on their part collaborating with the other fellows virtually. And the outcome is pretty good.” 

Yumi emphasizes that some of her best moments during the DigiCamp as a mentor includes seeing the participants grow as artists and turn their songs into a fully realized material that has potential to be massive. In terms of personal adjustments, Yumi makes the most out of her time holding a more relaxed conversation with the participants regarding what needs to be improved on their songs. “It felt like we’re not in a camp. It’s more of like we’re just in a video call talking to a friend and asking/giving an advice.”

Notwithstanding some minor drawbacks of remote learning, the DigiCamp proves to be a game-changing alternative for the traditional setup as it supported collaborative and higher-level learning through breakout room sessions, and fostered a virtual learning experience that allows participants to learn at their own pace. To quote Marlon Barnuevo, “If I were to gauge how much the participants were able to ‘step up and deliver’ through the quality of their most recent song submissions, I’d be proud to say that the entire PhilPop team has been very successful in meeting its goals.”

Over October navigates uncertainty with hope on new EP, Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow

Filipino alternative rock quartet Over October has spent a good chunk of their early days making a definitive bid for legitimacy with their brand of melodic and transcendent music. They started building their cred by playing for small gigs in bars such as Route 196 and Saguijo, before eventually headlining bigger venues and releasing two critically acclaimed records within the last 7 years: the delightful EP Free and the sonically arresting full-length album Press Play, both released under MCA Music Inc. in 2019.

Fast forward to 2021, Over October returns with a brand-new EP helmed during a time when everyone is navigating the pandemic with an uncertain future. Their latest EP, Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow is their answer to the ongoing crisis: a collection of songs that reflect their feelings, frustrations, and hopes during a tumultuous period in their respective lives. 

“At the same time, we wrote the songs during the well-known, often-cliche, but still heavy-hitting quarter life crisis happening in our personal lives,” Josh Buizon (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist) shares in a statement. “It speaks about the journey of loss, self-reflection, emotional and mental struggles, perseverance, and wanton joy despite things turning to shit. Some of these are in the context of love songs, but ultimately the message that we want to get across is that even though the world we live in is in chaos and the future seems so bleak, there is hope.”

The bulk of songwriting in the album was done by Josh Buizon and Joshua Lua (lead guitarist), but all the members have a hand in writing lyrics one way or another. Over October also took part in arranging the tracks off Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow, with guidance from their producer Jazz Nicolas and sound engineer Peavey Nicolas. This also marks the group’s most collaborative and experimental work to date, harnessing new sounds and arrangement styles to elevate the material into what it is now: a more eclectic sonic brew that’s more open to possibilities, without letting go of the accessibility that defines most of their releases in the past. 

“In these songs, we were able to try arrangements and instruments that we haven’t used before,” Lua admits. “It’s honestly amazing how the songs transformed from the first day of the recording to how they are now.”

To start the recording process for the EP, the members of Over October holed up on a house in La Union for fivedays to write and arrange their material and spent another two weeks in Manila-based Big Baby Studios with Jazz Nicolas and Peavy Nicolas for recording. Because of the current state of the pandemic, they stayed together for two weeks under a bubble, and the experience somehow gave the band a deeper perspective on the music-making side, and tested their friendship along the way.  

“Chemistry-wise, since we’ve been working with the Nicolas brothers for the past few releases, it was also easier to come up with ideas during the recording itself,” Buizon says. “They’re very chill and cool people, actually. Outside of recording, we’d watch Netflix documentaries about spicy food. They have a lot of different chili sauces in their studio and we’d get to try them all.”

Other than the fact that it has some Tagalog songs—a first in Over October’s repertoire, their brand-new EP, Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow is a lot more introspective as compared to their other releases. The songwriting is moresophisticated and subdued, with lovely moments where you can picture the emotions as if it were speaking to you in the dark. And most importantly, the new EP is musically cohesive, flowing neatly without sounding too curated or rehearsed. “That’s probably the best part— when you get in the studio and don't know what to expect,” Janessa Geronimo (drummer) points out. “We surprised ourselves a lot during this project. The most conscious effort we put in was probably writing in Filipino and trying to come up with new and refreshing sounds that still retain our music style.”

Joric Canlas (bassist) also shares that the album reflects how they’ve grown as individuals. “The EP’s a new feel because of being able to collaborate more with Sir Jazz and Sir Peavey and even amongst ourselves. You can cry, laugh, or even dance to these songs but the whole EP is meant to be a release and an encouragement to everyone who’s currently in a hard place.”

Sheer Embroidery Day 3

I have finally completed the Sheer Yellow kit from The Craft Central. This concludes my pattern tester duties for this round.

This third pattern was more challenging because of the wavy leaves. This did not stop me though, and I still enjoyed stitching the pattern to life! The result was worth the effort! I think I found a new hobby.

Rising alt-pop artist Mezzaluna conquers music on her own terms

Introduced earlier this year as one of the first Asian artists to join pan-regional music label, OFFMUTE, Mezzaluna has captivated music fans with her jazzy, soulful and sometimes brooding take on pop music. With deep, sultry vocals and intensely personal storytelling style, the Indonesian newcomer delivers inspiring and powerful songs with a universal reach.

She also grew up in a musical household as the daughter of Indonesian rockstar, BimBim — drummer of the legendary Indonesian rock band Slank, and started picking up the piano and guitar at an early age. Despite coming from a lineage of acclaimed and respected musicians, Mezzaluna forged a path of her own, and developed her own sense of artistry in a uniquely humbling way.

This sense of eclecticism is deeply felt on her debut single “In Situ,” which she wrote at the start of her music journey. “It was one of the quickest writing processes I’ve done as I was being honest with my feelings,” Mezzaluna shares. “Since it was based on my own personal experience, I was just speaking from my heart.”

Carrying the weight and wisdom of heartache beyond years, the alt-pop star explores darker but relatable themes that come from a place of experience. The glacially paced pop tune, which threads the line between darkwave and trip-hop, soul and jazz, came to fruition with Indonesian producer Gio Wibowo. 

“Working with Gio on the song was surreal to me as I didn’t think that I would make it this far,” the 20-year-old artist admits. “It started out as a fun little project that I thought would only stop there but it turned out great and I really am proud of it.” 

The track is accompanied with a music video helmed by Deby Sucha and produced by Howdy Productions Indonesia. The visual treatment conveys the anxious wistfulness and melancholy Mezzaluna sings about in her song: The juxtaposed imagery of light and dark mirrors the feelings of exposed vulnerability and obscured hopelessness, while exuding the polarizing tension of stillness in waiting and restlessness of impatience. 

"'In Situ is a song about reaching out to someone that isn't responding, so what's left is a feeling of hopelessness to the point where you just accept anything without expecting or fighting for it anymore," Mezzaluna explains. "The music video truly captures the essence of the song. I couldn't be prouder."

Eve Alai makes quarantine bearable with club anthem “Touch Me”

Electronic producer Eve Alai lights up the virtual dancefloor with bouncy house chords and throbbing percussions on his latest single “Touch Me,” to be released on October 8, 2021 under Umami Records. Featuring fiery vocals from Z, the infectious raver makes isolation bearable as it delivers another ecstatic shot of energy from start to finish. 

Even with the absence of clubs, “Touch Me” works as a soundtrack to late-night revelry. It’s a techno-inspired bop that underscores the healing power of being confidently sensual and hopeful despite being enveloped into the dark, trying times. 

With influences that range from British electronic producer Chris Lake to Grammy-nominated Australian music producer FISHER, Eve Alai takes “Touch Me” to effervescent places with its glorious serving of after-hours party music.

Unbeknownst to everyone, the slinky material has undergone several changes in the production, and wasn’t initially penned as a dance anthem. “It was written originally as an R&B song,” Eve Alai explains. “I took that vocal and transformed it into a house track.” 

Thanks to Eve Alai’s ‘90s techno production and Z’s robo-soul chops, the song delivers some of the most assured electronic music releases in Asia so far. It also speaks to an act of movement relevant to the current situation that people are facing right now.

Sheer Embroidery Day 2

I enjoyed day 2 of my sheer embroidery journey as a pattern tester for The Craft Central. This pattern has given me a few hours of crafting bliss. I was swamped with month-end tasks, so this gave my brain a much-needed respite. I was able to practice my embroidery skills while giving myself a break. Definitely a win-win!
